The Greatest Game on Ice

The Washington Capitals are doing something they have never done before. They are running the NHL! The Caps as of tonight have won twelve straight games and have the possibility of going to thirteen if they can take down Atlanta. There is something clicking with this team that has never been seen. They didn't even play this well when they went to the Cup finals in the past. But what is it? What is making this happen? I personally believe that it is the hockey gods. I believe that each season is one team's year. Last year you could clearly have the feeling the majority of the season that it was the Penguins' year. The season before it was Detroit's. I am not saying that only because the two teams won the cup. I am saying it because that is the feeling that is actually there. It is the hardest thing for me to say but I did say last season that this year would be the Caps' year and they would be the team to look out for. Fast forward to today and I'd have to say that I was right! I am not a professional on the Caps but I do try to watch as many of their games as possible to see what is going on. I would like all you Caps fans to weigh in with intelligent reasons why they are doing so well! They are getting great breaks for power plays and seem to almost score every time. They are getting goals by a lot more then just their star. They seem to walk into the third period and just tell the other team that it is their period and they won't let their oppenent borrow even 30 seconds of the period. I don't know a lot about Coach Boudreau but he is doing something right. The speed of the Capitals is what is causing them to draw penalties all day and that is destroying their oppenents. I of course as a Pens fan would like to see the Caps slide off and their winning streak come to an end. But as a hockey fan I would love to see the Caps bring the Cup to the Nation's Capital. Maybe only for a second but it would be amazing for the state of hockey in our area.

For me I guess the main question is can they hold this momentum after the olympic break. They are definitely guaranteed to make the playoffs due to the fact that they are about 20 points ahead of any team in the lackluster south east division. They have the chance to take out the Penguins record of 17 wins in a row. They have a chance to bring home the Cup! But can they do it? Can they stay strong long enough? Can they make it happen? I guess we'll have to wait until the rest of the story is written to find out!

Well, I didn't notice you responded to this last year! How about this year?! It seems like the opposite of what we talked about! What do you think they need to fix this year?

Latest update. The Caps have now won 14 in a row. Just three left to tie the record set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins! Can they do it?!?!?!?!

Well written Nigel. I love the fact that you can give credit where credit is due, your a true hockey fan. That being said, I'm going to try to keep this short since it is 2nd int. of the Caps/Thrash game.
Without looking at stats and summaries, I was thinking to myself earlier in the game that it seems like they trade off who is going to be hot. Semin had a 10 game point streak before last night. He's been super hot as of late. I would imagine that an opponent would keep their eyes on a hot player. So what do you expect from him. Well, what I expect is to see crazy puck handling and lots of shots, but tonight he seems to be playing that role and passing instead. It hasn't paid off yet, but if you look at the team they have a way of switching roles. Every line gets points. Every player weighs in. It's not to say that every other team doesn't do that, but the Caps have found a way to make it work. Speed, Will, Strength, Determination, Skill. They seem to have it all. PP is on it's game. Opponents may just have to score 5 goals to have a chance to win. I agree, 3rd periods seem to be the Caps as of late. I hope they can keep it up. I know I'm just rambling, maybe I'll have something better to say later. GO CAPS!
